Our Viking Workshop at Down Museum
We were very fortunate to be able to go to a Workshop on the Vikings just next door at the Down Museum. We learned a lot about the life of a normal Viking. There were lots of different artefacts we could look at and we got to try on Viking clothes and even helmets. It was a brilliant morning and a lot of thanks to Amy Button who was so engaging with the children.

P6 Trip to The Ballydugan Viking Village
All of our P6 children went on an amazing Viking Day at Ballydugan Medieval Village along with P6 children from Ballynahinch Primary School. The trip was funded through Good Relations in conjunction with Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.
It was a Celtic Viking Experience Day and the children got to learn lots about different aspects of Viking life in Ireland over 1000 years ago.
They heard from the Viking Chief or Jarl of the village as well as his wife Freya about how the Vikings lived, traded and fought in Ireland and where they had come from in Scandinavia (Norway, Denmark and Sweden).
The children had a great time and they got to try archery, looked at weapons, helped make bread and bake it, spun wool and looked at textiles. They also got to learn about Viking medicines as well about the way of life in Viking days.
The day had a very exciting end as the children learned about Viking fighting skills and were trained in how to form a Viking Shield Wall and even had a battle with a Viking raiding party. The final part was a re-enactment of Viking sword and axe fighting by the very experienced role-players.
The children had an unforgettable visit and our thanks must go to Katrina Hynds from the local council as well as the Medieval Village for hosting us so well.

P6 Residential Trip to Share Centre September 2023
The P6 Pupils at Downpatrick Primary School were on their four-day Residential Trip to Share Centre in Co Fermanagh from 19-22 September.
The group included children from the main school and P6 pupils from the school’s Learning Support Centre classes The Foxes and The Squirrels.
The children had a brilliant time together developing their independence and learning new skills and having new experiences. They spent three nights away from home and really enjoyed all the water activities and all the other activities provided by the staff at Share Centre. The children were a pleasure to take away and the teachers were complimented on the excellent behaviour and attitude displayed by the children during their trip. There were some very tired but happy P6s on the bus home on Friday afternoon!
Below are some photos from our trip.
