Shared Education

Downpatrick Primary School & St Brigid's Primary School

Picture
We at Downpatrick Primary School are very proud of our tradition of being a school that is open to all in Downpatrick and the surrounding areas.
We have very strong links with local primary and secondary schools through a range of initiatives down through the years.
For example through programmes such as The Comenius Project, EMU and Extended Schools.
Since 2016 we have been working closely with our neighbouring school in the town, St Brigid's Primary School.

2022-23

The Eco-Council and our School Council went on a Shared Education visit to the Newry, Mourne and Down Council offices recently.
We met the Chairman of the NMAD Council and we found out all about how the council works and the jobs it does in the local community.

P3 and the Owls LSC class met with P3 from St Brigid's PS for a morning of activities and fun.
Our P2  class welcomed P2 from St Brigid's PS for a morning of Play Based Learning.  They worked both inside on iPads and the Interactive Whiteboard and outside using our Mud Kitchens and other outside play equipment.

2021-22

Since March 2020 the physical meeting up aspects of the link between the two schools has been paused for the obvious Covid 19 reasons. However, that did not stop the two schools working together with our two Shared Education Co-Ordinators working and planning activities which continued our links over the past two years.

With the easing of restrictions we have been delighted to be able to restart the joint activities this summer term of 2022.
The P6 children from both schools had a super morning recently when they met up at Downpatrick PS for a P6 Sports Morning.
They split up into mixed groups and played a range of games and learnt new skills together.
Everyone had great fun and we hope to be able to have a P7 Sports Morning later in June.
The two schools hope to build on this successful ‘Re-Start’ next year with a lot more Shared Education activities across the year groups.

Previous Shared Education Projects with St Brigid's PS

Joint AED Training to help us be able to use our new life saving equipment.

On 13 June the staff from Downpatrick Primary School and the staff from St Brigid’s Primary School along with invited members from local agencies such as Rathkeltair Playgroup, Downpatrick Nursery and other local voluntary organisations took part in CPR and AED Training in our school hall.
The two schools are in the Shared Education Project and this vital training along with the purchase of an AED for each school was paid for under the programme.
Our thanks to the almost 30 people who attended in their own time and to the trainers, John and Ruth, who provided very interesting and engaging training.
Both schools have their AEDs in the schools’ foyer and will be available for emergency situations.
