Cross Country P6 / P7 Team Flahavan's XC League- Co Down - 15 Jan 2024
Mr. Stevenson and Mrs. Fallon took a strong P6/P7 team to the Dunleath Park playing fields for the final 1200m heat of the Flahavan’s Primary Schools Cross Country League for the Co Down Area.
There was a very good turnout of schools and while a cold day it was sunny and crisp with very little wind so great conditions for running. A Good group of mums and dads came along to support our team which really helped to spur them on.
There was a Fun Run which was then followed by two Girls’ and two Boys’ races.
The event was very well run by Athletics Northern Ireland and our runners had personal numbers with electronic tagging so we have the results published online.
We did very well with the Girls' Team being placed 7th out of 11 very good teams!
One of our girls was placed an brilliant 6th while another girl came an excellent 12th.
The Boys' Team came 10th out of 12 in an very strong field with our top 2 runners coming 25th and 28th out of 65.
Thanks must go to Mrs. Fallon who kindly took a group of children in her car as well as helping with supervision and preparation for the races.
Everyone had a great time despite the cold day. The children were, as usual, excellent in terms of behaviour and they really were a credit to the school.

Cross Country Running
On 17 October the school sent a 8 strong team of 4 boys and 4 girls to represent the school at the Newry Mourne and Down Cross Country Challenge at Dunleath Park. Our runners gave a great account of themselves in a packed field of over 200 runners in both Girls’ and Boys’ races.
2 girls came an excellent 59th and 65th place and two boys ran excellent races coming in at 46th and 61st place.
It was a excellent morning all round and the children really enjoyed their first race of the year. We were delighted to have our school mascot ‘Patrick the Penguin’ along to support us and be a part of the team photos. Our thanks to Mrs Fallon for her support and to Mrs Thompson who entered the team and then came along on her day off with her niece to support the team.
We are looking forward to more cross country races in the months ahead and seeing how we can improve our technique and pace!

Handwriting Effort Award
These children have put tremendous effort into their handwriting this term.
Principal's Special Award
This is awarded to a child for an exceptional act in school or out of school.
This P7 boy represented the best values of the pupils of Downpatrick Primary School on a school trip to W5 in Belfast recently. The whole group of P7s and the Foxes class were playing on quite high ‘Climb It’ equipment when another child who had done amazingly well in climbing so high was finding it difficult to climb back down. The P7 boy saw that the child was having trouble and without prompting he went over and helped, encouraged and showed the child how to get himself down off the equipment. He stayed with the child all the way down and showed great kindness, empathy and was so helpful and encouraging. When all was resolved he just went on his way and re-joined the other children on the equipment. As well as the Special Award the P7 boy received a special bottle of the ‘Prime’ drink which our youth worker Billy Fyffe had brought along to assembly. He also wins 50 Points for his House!
I was so impressed and pleased with what he did. Well Done!
